Our Work
Saltire Centre
The Saltire Centre is the focus of learning and student services at Glasgow Caledonian University, and is one of the most ambitious and innovative leaning environments in the UK.
It is anticipated that the Saltire Centre will join a select influential group of world leading learning environments across the globe that have set the standard for future progressive learning spaces through their design. The interior has been developed around the concept of 'the building as a city' with districts, edges, landmarks, nodes and paths. For users to relate to the different areas each floor can be experienced as a 'new' district with its own identity and function, yet it remains part of the overall environment. To integrate the whole environment, the personality of each floor or 'district' is conveyed visually through illustrations, signage and also through sound, from the ambient market place sounds on the ground floor to the 'hush' on the fourth floor. The Saltire Centre makes use of a different graphic design on each floor. The designs contribute to the look and feel of the floors combining with the colour theme and acoustic signs, as you enter each floor, to produce a unique ambience ranging from the busy city on the ground floor, through 'airport' circulation to country scene, domestic garden, and living room. Although each floor is unique there are references to other floors embedded in the designs - for example there is a city scene from level 0 in the camera lens on level 4. 'The work undertaken by Signs Express (Glasgow) has been excellent. Their ability to produce the required visual or artefact to the quality required and their attention to detail was superb. They were client focussed and this made for an excellent working arrangement. I would have no hesitation in using Signs Express again or in recommending them to others.' Tom Finnigan, Director, Learner Support, Glasgow Caledonian University.
