Signs Express (Mullingar) recently held a competition in conjunction with Mullingar Arts centre inviting school children of Westmeath to submit artwork for the chance to see it re-created as a mural on one of the walls at The Art Centre.
The judges for the competition, Pat Ginty (Signs Express Mullingar, owner), Joanne Duffy (Signs Express Mullingar, marketing executive), Sean Lynch (Mullingar Atrs Centre, Director) and Denise Whelehan (Mullingar Arts Centre, Administrator) were inundated with entries and had the difficult choice of selecting a winner from hundreds of fantastic pieces of work. In fact, the decision proved to be too difficult for the four who made a unanimous decision to select two winners instead of one as they just couldn't decide who the prize should go to. Laura Liaukeviciute from St. Mary's National School, Athlone and Nimrah Nawaz from Educate Together National School, Mullingar were presented with printed canvases of their winning designs whilst at the unveiling of their wall murals earlier today by Conor Quinn and The White Chalks and Cllr. Peter Burke. The ceremony took place at the Arts Centre and both Laura and Nimrah attended, with their class mates and family, along with the judges. Joanne Duffy, who came up with the idea in December and promoted it to the schools of Westmeath, said 'I had an idea to get local school children involved in a creative project whilst also benefiting the under-funded Mullingar Arts Centre. I know how much the centre supports creativity in the younger generations so thought it was a perfect match. I had no idea that the competition would be such a success and I am delighted with all the fantastic artwork we received and the amount of local enthusiasm it's generated. We all think the finished murals look great, so well done Laura and Nimrah – fantastic work!' All of the artwork entered in to the competition will be on display at the Arts Centre for the next few weeks, giving people the chance to take a look at all the fabulous pictures received and showcase just how creative the kids of Westmeath are. Director of Mullingar Arts Centre, commented; "To say we are delighted with the whole event is an understatement, everyone is thrilled and the compliments we are getting are fantastic."
