As a longstanding supplier to LST Projects and the NHS we were approached in March 2023 to deliver a project which involved over 300sqm of wall graphics to the newly refurbished Child Development Centre at Crawley Hospital. Our portfolio has seen a surge in wall graphics projects, instilling a heightened sense of confidence in our customer, assuring them of our reliability and trustworthiness to deliver the project to the required standard.
A late addition to the project, was an illuminated flex face sign which needed to integrate with both the ceiling and a decorative tree feature. An item the client was finding very challenging to source due to the intricate method of fixing. After an initial assessment, we agreed almost straight away and said YES!
A unique and creative brief
The first key feature of the brief was the digitally printed wall graphics. They needed over 300sqm of the colourful and engaging illustrative graphics to be installed in the corridors, inside the rooms and on some of the doors. The second was to produce and install large, illuminated sky effect 3200mm square flex face suspended sign with a custom-made metal profile to act as a finishing detail and support for the suspended ceiling surrounding the feature.
Specification and consultation
Initially our main role was consultative and once we had secured the work, we were in regular contact with all stakeholders to ensure there were no surprises and the project could be delivered on time.
Firstly, for the wall graphics we carried out a very thorough survey where we determined the location of every obstruction and piece of ironmongery that could be problematic during the installation. This helped us to make accurate production files which resulted in the installation team being able to complete the work in the four days we had planned.
Furthermore, the ceiling feature had to surround a pillar and drainage pipes so again the survey carried out helped us determine the best way to fabricate the flex face and finishing trim.
Artwork manipulation
Being the first point of contact with architects, designers, and site managers of this project, we made sure to keep in close communication with all parties, constantly supplying updated drawings following our survey and making required amendments as the project developed.
Production and installation
Then came production! For the wall graphics, we used the Epson Surecolor S80600 with IP2558 with Matt laminate from Spandex to reduce glare from artificial lighting and sunlight coming through the windows. For the ceiling feature, we opted for Novatex from Nova Aluminium with a custom-fabricated finishing trim.
One challenge we encountered during the production and installation phase was the volume of prints. Each wall was a different design and size with varied obstructions. We had to make sure that everything was accurately labelled and marked up on the prints and visuals to help the install team easily work their way through the task.
The most challenging part was the 3200mm flex face. The installation wasn’t straight forward as the obstacles around the pillar and tree meant the space available was very restricted. Thanks to our experienced team of fitters lead by our Production and Installation Manager – we managed to overcome these challenges to create a fantastic finish!
A space that leaves a lasting impression!
We’re absolutely delighted with the finished result, and think the space is a bright, welcoming environment for children at the centre. Every room now has impact thanks to the wall graphics, but the real feature is the sky above the tree in the waiting area.
Feedback from the client
After the project was completed, we received a phone call from one of the site managers to express how happy they were with the work carried out and that we saved their day undertaking the ceiling feature. He also passed on thanks from the NHS staff in the ward who are delighted with our wall graphics.
Testimonial from Signs Express
“The delivery of this project is true testament to the team. Starting with Michał who sold and managed the project and Mark W. who helped deliver in the centre and on site.
The team worked incredibly hard to ensure that the graphics and the installation were completed to the highest standards.”
-José Ferreira, Centre Manager
